As summer winds down, Toronto lights up with one of its most beloved traditions: the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE). Running from mid-August through Labour Day, “The Ex” is a dazzling mix of rides, entertainment, gastronomy, and nostalgia—all set against the historic charm of Exhibition Place. Just a short ride or walk from Novotel Toronto Centre, it’s the perfect addition to your summer stay.

What is CNE?

The Canadian National Exhibition, affectionately called “The Ex,” has been running since 1879. Originally a showcase for agriculture and technology, it has grown into Canada’s largest annual community event, drawing over 1.6 million visitors across 18 days. Today it’s a full carnival experience with midway rides, live performances, exhibitions, a farmyard, international pavilions, and the thrilling Labour Day weekend air show.

How can I get to CNE from Novotel Toronto Centre?

Exhibition Place is conveniently located just west along Lake Shore Blvd. Here are your transit options:

  • TTC:

    • 511 Bathurst or 509 Harbourfront streetcars from Union Station, ending at Exhibition Loop.

  • GO Train: Take the Lakeshore line to Exhibition GO (1 stop).

  • Taxi/Rideshare: A quick 10-minute ride along the Gardiner Expressway.

Parking is available but limited—public transit is often the easiest and most scenic choice.

How long is CNE in Toronto?

The CNE runs for 18 days, beginning on the third Friday of August and concluding on Labour Day (first Monday in September). For 2025, it’s scheduled August 15 to September  1.

What time does CNE close in Toronto?

Daily operating hours for 2025 are as follows:

  • Grounds & buildings: 10 am – midnight (10 am – 9 pm on Labour Day).

  • Midway rides:

    • Weekdays: 11 am – midnight

    • Weekends: 10 am – midnight

    • Labour Day: 10 am – 9 pm

Arrive early for full enjoyment and avoid last-minute rush.

How much is an hour at CNE?

CNE doesn’t charge by the hour for entrance or rides—admission is flat daily pricing. However:

  • Advance adult admission: ~$30 ($32.99 online with fee + HST)

  • Ride-All-Day pass: $87.99 online

  • PRESTO Perks: Save up to 47% on passes until Aug 14 ($22.46 admission, $42.81 rides)

  • Weekday after‑5 pm deal: Admission as low as $13

Is CNE cash only?

Vendors accept credit, debit, and PRESTO but not all do. Many are cash-preferred, so bring a small supply. ATMs are scattered around the fairgrounds.

Can I bring a backpack into the CNE?

Yes, backpacks are allowed—but keep them small. The grounds get crowded, and large bags can be a hassle. If you can go hands-free with minimal gear, it’ll make your visit smoother.

What about the food at CNE?

The CNE’s Food Building is legendary:

  • Global culinary stations: Enjoy everything from smoked meats and poutine to adventurous eats like ketchup ice cream and deep-fried delights.

  • Classic midway treats: Think funnel cakes, cotton candy, corn dogs—perfect nostalgia.

  • Innovative pop‑ups: Each year introduces wild creations.

  • Multiple food stations and cafes across the grounds let you sample local and international flavours in bite‑sized form.

Tips from Novotel:

  • Arrive hungry and wander Food Building and international pavilions early to avoid the lunch-time rush.

  • Stay hydrated and pace yourself—there’s a lot to sample and it’s an urban foodie adventure.

  • Plan breaks between rides or shows to enjoy music at the Bandshell, wander The Farm, or catch demos and exhibitions around the grounds.

Whether you’re rounding out your summer stay in our city, soaking up carnival thrills, or indulging in foodie wonders, the CNE is a must-do experience. With rides, concerts, exhibitions, food craziness, and historic flair—all just minutes from Novotel—the Ex is your ticket to unforgettable summer memories.
